DICOM
|
|
|
The DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard is
a detailed specification that describes a means of formatting and
exchanging medical images and associated information. DICOM was
approved by ACR-NEMA in November 1993 and by CEN/TC251 as a European
Standard in 1995 (ENV 12052:1995 - MEDICOM). DICOM relies on computer
industry standard network connections such as TCP/IP and on offline
media such as CD-R. DICOM supports a range of diagnostic modalities
beyond CT and MR, including Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Computed
Radiography, X-Ray Angiography, X-Ray Radiofluoroscopy, digitized film
and video capture. DICOM also includes mechanisms for accessing image
archives, the integration of imaging equipment with other information
systems and the connection of networked hard-copy devices.

DICOM General Purpose CD-R Image Interchange Profile
|
|
|
In order to exchange images using offline media it is necessary to
select from a variety of possible choices including physical media
type, filesystem format and data encoding. DICOM Supplement 19
defines such an "Application Profile" which is appropriate for general
purpose interchange of multi-modality images and related data using
CD-R media. This profile permits any type of image to be included but
allows only a single specific encoding of uncompressed images (using
the "Explicit VR Little Endian Uncompressed Transfer Syntax"). DICOM
also defines other application profiles for specific clinical contexts
where alternative choices are more appropriate.
